Among the Trees
Forest School: SPRING SESSIONS
Service Description
Inspired by the Danish Forest schools, and pulling from educational philosophies such as Regio Emilia and Waldorf, Among The Trees, hopes to help today’s youth see beyond their screen and seek a world full of wonder and magic that used to exist before the Tik Tok generation. Facilitated in both Spanish and English, Among The Trees follows a child-led, thematic approach to learning where a specific goal or theme is introduced to the students and then curiosity leads the way and nature teaches the lesson. Here at Among the Trees, we ascribed to the philosophy that there is no bad weather, only bad clothing. Rain or shine, snow or wind, facilitators and students head outside to explore. Facilitators encourage the students to explore the world around them, ask questions and seek out their own answers. We hope to challenge the idea that adults are the sole arbiters of information and instead allow children the time and space to discover on their own. Our Spring sessions center on the theme of PLANT LIFE CYCLES. Through exploration, students will find the seed hidden in their favorite fruit. They will then experiment to see what will happen when that seed is planted. Through questions such as “ How did that flower get there if no one planted it?” and “ What happens if we forget to water our plants?” Students will begin to gain an in-depth and authentic understanding of the plant cycle as well as develop an appreciation for the natural world around them. Over the three sessions, students will focus on the different stages of the life cycle, and, in between classes, they will have their own bean plant to take home and observe as it grows.
